Usage of floor bed while parenting a child

Updated: Feb 8, 2019

While making parenting decisions we always think about what is going to advantageous the children in the long term. What can we do today to help them tomorrow? Fostering independence is one of those essential things. It is harder at the first but in the long run, it is of great benefit. While using a crib might be easier in a short period but a Floor Bed is best for every child.

Now the question arises why do we use a floor bed? Here are the chief few points that proves its necessity:

Freedom of movement: Children cannot be enclosed; they are free to move, to get in and out of bed. It is observed that most children are much more active when using a floor bed and move around then crawl around much more, as their entire room is baby proof there is a big area they are free to move about in. This is of advantageous especially in modern times when children are often constrained in a crib, to a high chair or rocker then to a baby car seat or stroller, yes some of these are essential; however children need every chance possible for freedom of movement.

Promote independence: Children can get up without anyone’s help and read a book, or dress up by themselves; they are not dependent on the guardian. As time passes by and especially with an older toddler they can lie down when they are tired especially for daytime naps.

Empower the child: The child should make their own decisions. This is especially applicable for a toddler who is capable to get out of bed and play rather than crying at the crib waiting for someone to help them out. Although the child may still be enclosed to their room they have a bigger area which is more power and control over them.

Respect: You will find a floor bed more respectful than a crib, especially in case of an older toddler; it respects their natural needs and their ability. The child is not willing to sleep because they have no other option, because they are confined and can't move, rather the child is taking their own decision to go to bed and lie down (sometimes fall asleep). While there were times your children would wake in the night, have a problem in falling asleep, there were no fights to get into bed.

Comfort: This is not such an issue, however for the child and the parent a floor bed very comfortable. You would easily lie next to your child, breastfeed them and sometimes you can sleep next to them. This was much easier on a floor bed and which could not happen in a crib.

It is mostly having seen that a crib is preferred by most parents. I am not trying to influencing you or anyone else about the benefits of a floor bed, but rather portraying some ideas that are not so common. We don't need to describe our parenting decisions or sleeping arrangements but it is nice to discuss especially among like-minded parents.
